Today’s find: Out of time

For a number of reasons, we’re a bit behind schedule in tending to our backyard flower garden this spring. Normally, we’d have a variety of bedding plants selected and planted by late May. This year…well, let’s just say the trip to the nursery is still on our to-do list.

And yet, despite our thoroughgoing neglect, the unkempt plot is already yielding a bit of beauty: a few Sweet William blossoms poking through.

Image 1Interesting. I haven’t yet ‘found time’ to spruce up my little corner of the world. But the Author of time (and of beauty) somehow still manages to get the job done.

Interesting, but not surprising, I suppose.

God doesn’t really need my engagement…or ‘my’ time…to set things in motion, as the book of Proverbs reminds us on this solemnity of the Holy Trinity:

…from of old I [Wisdom] was poured forth,
at the first, before the earth.
When there were no depths I was brought forth,
when there were no fountains or springs of water;
before the mountains were settled into place,
before the hills, I was brought forth;
while as yet the earth and fields were not made,
nor the first clods of the world.

God ‘does’ Sweet Williams, right here in the suburbs. God animates these tiny blooms…and so much more – an entire universe of wonder and beauty. The Psalmist notices it, too:

When I behold your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars which you set in place —
What are humans that you should be mindful of them,
or the children of humans that you should care for them?

You have made us little less than the angels,
and crowned us with glory and honor.
You have given us rule over the works of your hands…

We celebrate God’s creative wonder today, by marveling about the mystery. God, three persons…one being.

God, beyond our understanding…and yet, revealed to us in an intimate way…in the person of Jesus. In the life-giving breath of the Spirit.

In the simple beauty of a spring blossom.

Let us pause now…to recall that we are in the presence of the Holy & Merciful One.
